Intern Spotlight : Yubin Lim

Yubin Lim

Graphic Design Intern

Name: Yubin Lim
School: Arkansas State University
Major: Graphic Design
Department at Optus: Marketing

What were your responsibilities during your internship?:
Optus recently rebranded, so I was responsible for updating their resources to meet the new brand standards. Not only did I gain valuable experience while working with the professionals at Optus, but I also feel very proud that I was able to be a part of strengthening the company’s brand identity. I created promotional materials, joined a weekly team meeting, and updated existing assets such as user guides and marketing literature. I also created infographics, collateral, and packaging.

What is the most exciting aspect of your internship?:
One thing I really enjoyed during my internship was the marketing team held a weekly meeting every Friday. Thankfully, the team members let me join the meeting and fully treated me as a graphic designer, not a student intern. I sincerely appreciate that the meetings helped me understand the company, witness the decision-making process, and share individual ideas. Instead of asking me to copy something or make coffee, the team members respected me and my design and gave me true feedback.

What is the most challenging aspect of your internship?:
As I only worked on Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, I had to sit down for a very long time. However, this would also help me to grow my patience and time-management skills because I had to finish the given project in one day.

What did you learn during the internship?:
Working at Optus taught me to work efficiently, express my ideas to the team, and understand design problems and revise them better. In addition, I was able to forge my skill sets in Photoshop, typography, and visual hierarchy, especially for multiple pages. By complying with this, I was able to develop my portfolio and become more professional.

Which aspects of your internship did you get the most out of?:
The internship experience gave me insight into what it would be like if I worked as a professional graphic designer. Even though sometimes, I was not a perfect intern, I enjoyed being involved in the company’s internal meetings, affairs, and communications. This would help me, in the future, understand the company deeply and consider what I can do better for the company.

Editor’s note: Yubin was, in fact, the perfect intern. We love her.

What specific professional benefit has this internship provided?:
Through this internship, I have improved my ability to manage projects in a team environment and collaborate effectively. This experience also affirmed my career path after graduating from the university.

Would you recommend our internship to others?: YES!
